"Wow, this place is beautiful. Thanks for thinking of me as your date," Alissa says as we walk into the ballroom.

She's wearing a red evening gown and looks stunning, but somehow that does nothing for me. I've only got eyes for one woman in this room, and she is not on my arm right now.

"Yeah, sure. Let's go get a drink." I lead her further into the room where we stop and wait in line at the bar.

I grab my bourbon while Alissa orders a chardonnay before we go find our seats. The tickets for this event run for ten thousand a piece so the money gets raised through attendance. People only come to mingle and show their face. It's a sign of power to attend one of these events, not a sign of anyone's generosity. I find our table in the back where my fellow colleagues are already seated with their spouses or dates.

Lucky me, I'm sitting next to Alissa and Tiffany. Now I get a front row seat to another man trying to win her over. I sit down and spot the chief on the other side of the table, Amanda sitting to the right of him. Great! This night couldn't get any better. Now I get to watch someone try to steal my promotion and someone try to steal my girl. Except neither are mine, and that pisses me off right now.

"Good evening, Jackson," Keith says. "You, remember my wife, Susan."

"Yes, of course. How are you two this evening?" I ask them.

"Oh, it's a lovely night to get out. It's been so long since the two of us have gotten dressed up and gone out together. I was just so excited for this event. Right, darling?" Susan says to Keith as he leans in kisses her cheek.

I don't know how the two of them do it. I work with this man; see the kind of hours he has had to put in. And yet, she doesn't seem resentful.

I manage to spend the next thirty minutes avoiding looking to my left where Tiffany sits. I've done just about everything I can to maintain a conversation with Dr. Bower and his fiancé, who are on my right sitting next to Alissa.

"Tiffany, how has your time at Anderson been so far? I hope everyone has been treating you well," Keith says.

I steal a glance her way and she's looking right at me. "Everyone has been amazing. I have zero complaints."

Miles puts his arm around her and leaves his hand on her shoulder. "Everybody loves Tiffany. She has fit in perfectly with our department. Although, what's not to love about her."

Okay, he's seriously starting to piss me off. He needs to stop kissing her ass like she's some prize to be won.

A Frank Sinatra song starts to play, and everybody starts to get up for a dance. I wasn't going to ask Alissa until Miles gets Tiffany out there. I can't just sit here and watch them dance together, my body is holding too much anger and adrenaline for me to sit still right now.
